Found them on a ridge in Islip Canyon.

Nice pictures Sean. Was it at the base or near dead conifers? What size? I would need to see much more of the mushroom to make a field ID but they are possibly neolentitus ponderosas.

No. I don't think the ridge had conifers, even before the fire. The shrooms were found around 2750' elevation, just below this point.JerryN wrote:Was it at the base or near dead conifers? What size?
They were about two or three inches in diameter, with about the same height. I found them in a small shaded section next to what might have been some half-burned scrub oaks that survived the fire. These are the other pics I took of them.

That would not be the one. Possibly its smaller cousin lepideus (also known as the train wrecker mushroom because it decomposes wooden railroad ties) but I can't see enough of the mushroom to tell. I would need to see the gills and the entire stalk including the underground part to have a chance at positive identification. It doesn't really matter because they are pretty. Thanks for the pictures.
