I was treated to two rattlesnakes on my latest hike. One on a summit boulder of Eagle Crag, one on the trail returning.

My guess is both were western diamondbacks, not sure. I got a little video of the second, larger one.

Both are speckled rattlesnakes... specifically the Southwestern Speckled Rattlesnake. (Diamond-backeds only peek into the SE corner of California.) Nice pics! It's cool to see how the speckleds' coloration match their environment.

Mike P,

As always, thanks for the positive IDs.

Yes, Eagle Crag via the Cutca Trail, Cleveland National Forest. High Point Road (8S05) just opened a week or two ago.
