Not quite the San Gabriel range but close enough...
Five of us headed down the 7.5 mile South Kaibab Trail into the Grand Canyon on Sunday, March 2. The views were incredible!
We stayed in Williams on Saturday night where it snowed but the canyon was only subjected to rain. Our trail down was very muddy.
At the bottom of the S Kaibab Trail we crossed the Colorado River at the Black Suspension Bridge.
On our first night on the trail we camped at the Bright Angel Campground just downstream from the Phantom Ranch. By nightfall, the place was packed. We were told that this part of the Grand Canyon will be full every night until Thanksgiving.
We left camp on Monday and followed the Bright Angel Trail over the Silver Suspension Bridge.
The Colorado River was quite cold.
We headed up the Bright Angel Trail.
After 4.5 miles we found our Monday night's stop at the Indian Garden Campground. We dropped our packs at our campsite and headed out onto the 3 mile round trip Plateau Point Trail high above the Colorado River.
We left Indian Garden on Tuesday morning for a relentless uphill climb back to the South Rim. The grove of green cottonwoods in the center of the picture is Indian Garden Campground.
The five of us came back with a great appreciation for the Grand Canyon. We definitely plan to return for longer and deeper backcountry camping!
