Already a week old for this, but part of the Memorial Day weekend efforts to get out a little - we went up to Sunset Peak on May 25.
One of those days when I had a lot of projects to do at home but as usual the mountains were calling - I knew that anything long would be out of the question and Icehouse would be a zoo, so we went to Sunset Peak.
I was really surprised not to see any other cars parked at Cow Canyon Saddle when we pulled in at 8:45, but figured maybe the gloomy weather below kept folks away. It was a great day outside, as we were above the clouds, and as always the views didn't disappoint.
We poked around the summit for about 30 minutes, had some Clif Bar snacks and then headed down. On the way we finally saw some other people, passing four other groups on their way up for some San Gabriels fun.
A few pics:
The road was graded recently, making for a nice easy walk.
Clear skies and distant views.
Lookout and Baldy from the trail.
As if cairns are needed - this at the junction of the two fire roads.
Just about at the junction of the road to Sunset's summit.
Reaching the top.
Looking towards Mt Wilson and the cloud layer.
Hanging around at the summit for a while.
Clouds starting to filter up the canyon.
