We saw it while hiking the Harding Truck Trail in the Santa Ana Mountains.

Spotted Towhee, very common but generally hidden in brush.

You pose a rather interesting question Mr. Greg. Are the Towhees always spotted when they're spotted? Perhaps their coloration is sex, season or age affected. Thus they may not be spotted when spotted.
