Spring is the best time to hike the Desert Peaks with gorgeous wildflowers on full display. I first went up Black Mountain#6, the highest point of the El Paso range. This is a unique peak since it's actually a volcano with a distinct crater. Saw a gravesite of an old miner with a memorial plaque. Access is by a dirt road and you need 4WD. There is no trail, just straight up cross country. A very wild, isolated place.
Next up was Red Mountain. Another cross country deal, with an old survey site on top. Old gas containers are still strewn about the summit.
Experienced the strongest winds ever on top, well over 50 mph and I actually had trouble moving.

I love driving through Red Mountain! I still need both those peaks, hopefully this summer driving to or from the sierra.
