Thinking of taking my son over to South Fork this weekend but not sure about the avalanche dangers. How far in can we go without worrying about it? Or is it a bad idea period?

Should we stick to San Jacinto instead? It's a bit too crowded for my taste though ...

The road to the South Fork trailhead might not be open. Does anyone know?

Going to check that tomorrow when Mill Crk Rng Station is open, they close on Tuesday and Wednesdays. CAL Trans/CHP website shows chains required but 4 X 4 with "snow tires" from Angelus Oaks to Big Bear dam required.

I would guess that only the rangers will know the condition of Jenks Lake Road or the Sheriff who lives in Angelus Oaks will.

Here's the link to CAL Trans road conditions for the HWY-38:

This of course doesn't guarantee that the South Fork is cleared -- it might be buried with 5-6 ft of snow
