Had the morning free, so I spent most of it driving out to these two peaks at the far eastern edge of the San Gabriels. Spent the rest of the time taking in the unique views of the higher peaks in the area.

Yes. The PCT connects the two. I wanted to do that but didn't have enough time. Elwood wrote up a TR recently about the route (he even continued on to Dawson).
Gobblers Knob, the dirt road to the TH, the TH and the trail are entirely in the San Bernardino NF. So I assume it was legal.
Circle Mtn. is in the San Bernardino NF, and I think the TH and trail lie on the border between the San Bernardino NF and that part of the San Bernardino NF administered by the Angeles NF. So I assume it was legal. So did the two bow hunters and two other hikers I saw.
Ultimately, who the hell really knows though. The road closed sign on the ACH at Big Pines said something along the lines of 'public access was limited to the highway and private businesses'. It's possible to drive around the closure gate. According to that wording the public can drive on the highway! But I doubt it. So you figure it out, and stop asking me stupid questions!
Hike Up don't let your freind (who's now down to one hiking blog site) know anything about this hike or you're going to hear about it for at least one lifetime, maybe two

Why, I ask you, for Cryin' Out Loud, why? Wasn't the other side of the road good enough for them?
Feeling cooped up because I can't go hiking since the baby is about to come any minute? No, not me. I'm fine. I don't even like hiking. Go ahead. Hike. See if I care.
Just cause it's sitting in the back of my head - Why did the chicken cross the road? To prove to the "Possum" that it could be done - caution/sorry road kill joke
