Matt,

Looks like a great hike (I've always enjoyed that area). I'm with you that it's better to schelp water from the bottom of the swithbacks rather than to go up to FC Saddle, drop your pack, and then decend on the old trail to Lodgepole Spring.

The only time I'd head down to Lodgepole for water would be if the water source at the start of the switchbacks were dry or something like that.

If coming from the west, I normally skip the Trail Flats route and head to Lodgepole Spring for water. From Lodgepole Spring, I'll head up to either Fish Creek Saddle or Lodgepole Saddle (aka Zahniser-Lake Saddle) depending on my plans, and then head up to SG summit.

I really enjoyed the Fish Creek approach Simonov showed us Memorial Weekend, via Aspen Grove.

Matt, how is the dirt road from Aspen trailhead up to Skyhigh?

Skyhigh? or Fish Creek?

The road to Fish Creek Trailhead is passable to Mission creek Trailcamp & Fish Creek

Acme.com Map
  1. Aspen Grove TH
  2. Fish Creek TH
  3. Mission creek Trailcamp
There was two low clearance passenger cars at the TH when I returned on Friday AM

There is one spot A&B that requires care other than that, it clear sailing!

I'm sleeping on the summit of San G this Saturday 8 August. It's a shuttle trip starting at Fish Creek trailhead, then a climb to the summit, then return to South Fork trailhead via the Dollar Lake Trail.

If anyone is interested in coming along, let me know before Wednesday. We could use people with SUVs for the shuttle.
