Is it possible to hike to the Ski Hut from Manker Flats without crampons? Looking for a Sunday moderate hike with a newbie, but something with some climbing and elevation.

Many thanks in advance for any intell.

yes, you should have no problem hiking to the ski hut without crampons.

What are the current conditions of the trail to the ski hut below Baldy Bowl?

Just wondering if there is still enough snow in the bowl to justify bring crampons and axe on a trip this weekend? Would like to go up the bowl rather than follow the trail route. Thanks for any input.

Its dry man. Not cramps needed. The north face is still snow packed, if you want to try that.

Anyone been up since the storms? Curious about snow conditions, amount, coverage, color, etc. Is it time to sharpen up the tools??? :D

Actually that was a link to some other dude's blog - no idea who it is but I saw it on some other forum and figured I'd give a link to it!

Had the opposite effect on me. I was all set for a Baldy climb this weekend, but when I saw there was no snow I decided to spend the weekend fixing cars instead.

OK, had to go up and see if I could find any snow....looked for the better part of half a day and didn't see so much as a single flake--on Baldy. San G does have some patchy coverage near the summit though. It was alot nicer on Baldy than down in Baldy Village, the summit was 55 degrees, sunny, and the wind was calm to 15, plenty of people heading up too. Baldy Village was so foggy it looked liked an out of control forest fire. Totally nice day on the mountain!

There was snow on Baldy this weekend, no need for ice tools yet.

Saturday,

The first mile or two was socked in, but it was clear on top.

About halfway up Register Ridge

It sure looks like snow on San G

Scattered patches past the bowl on the Ski Hut Trail. Summit is mostly clear save for a few patches of refrozen snow. Definitely doable in boots, though a few stretches were much more comfortable with 'pons. I couldn't assess the condition of the Bear Flat trail from my route.

how is the coverage on the shady steep area, on the ski hut trail, above the hut but below that ridge from where you can see the other side?

It is a jigsaw puzzle of snow and ice and dirt. Those are some of the scattered patches Elwood mentions.
You can make it most of the way up on dirt. It can be very slippery on some of the steep sections, the track ices up at night.

See Elwood's post on TRs he had good pix of that slope. I had boots w/no tread and a doggie pulling on me - it was v. slippery so I turned around.... some people were going up with backpacks and tennis shoes. Guess it's all what you're comfort level is.
