That's annoying, especially on a maintained trail. I haven't hiked this trail. Maybe I'll go take the flags down next week.

More:

1) Spoke with mom, said brother (who volunteers at observatory) is staying away this weekend due to 'some kind of big race'...so, course markers gone wild? A quick Google only turned up results for races earlier this year, or scheduled for next year. Will keep looking to see if I can find any info.

2) There was a large group camped at West Fork last night, several vehicles parked, and hoses from the cistern down into camp. Possibly related?

3) USFS or someone did a thinning operation near the top, about down to the first switchback. The thinning op was last week, so 99.9% sure the survey tape had nothing to do with any trail work.

USFS is doing a controlled burn on the summit of Mt Wilson, specifically the top of Kenyon-Devore Tr. I was there yesterday, smoke was augmenting the clouds and produced a dense fog. I'd apparently gone quite a ways into the burn before I actually saw it...eerie little campfires surrounding me in the fog! There was a fairly understated warning on the summit. Didn't look very dangerous, but I decided to abort.

Anyway, looks like it's still going: HPWREN Cam - N

Yesterday afternoon I drove to Mt. Wilson and walked down Kenyon DeVore. I hoped to reach the Gabrielino Trail junction and turn around, but I only made it 2.1 miles before deciding to return due to pain in my right leg. It was my first time on this trail. Last year I had heard it was reopened after the Bobcat Fire Closure ended, and the MTBers restored it. It's a very pleasant trail that zigzags around the north slopes of Wilson. Lots of trees, some burned. The path is clear with only minimal issues here and there. I passed a gully, dry at the crossing, but flowing only a short distance away. The spring was once piped. I found ruins of a couple small structures with pipes inside. Perhaps old pump houses? A date on one of them read "9-1-48." The pipes no longer carry water.

I hiked down the Kenyon Devore back in 2007 and a month later I hiked up the Kenyon Devore. Granted this was 17 years ago but it is one of the most enjoyable trails in the Mt. Wilson area. Unfortunately this was before I owned a camera...wtf? It was also before all of the fires that have since affected the area.

1st hike was KD to Gabrielino to Newcomb Pass to Rim Trail to Mt. Wilson to KD trail head.

2nd hike was Red Box to KD to Red Box (via road).

If I recall correctly, the KD trail used to be called the Rattlesnake Trail. I don't have a source for that.

In any case, my comment is meant to be a reference to the beauty of this trail.

It's called "Rattlesnake Trail" on the '95 USGS, which is what CalTopo still uses for the Scanned Topo layer.

Note that the Gabrielino split the Rattlesnake and ate a piece of it.

The FS website still thinks the trail ends at Redbox-Rincon Road.
