Two separate incidents.
One was in Eaton Canyon near Henninger Flats.
The other was in "Monkey Canyon" which is really the Narrows area of Big Tujunga Canyon. I think they call it monkey canyon because everyone is climbing around and swinging on ropes into the water and stuff like a bunch of monkies.

I've been to Henninger Flats like 50 times and never went up that canyon under the bridge. Don't do that cement thing yet. Taco and Co. gonna lead me up to Idlehour some day soon.
I've done that mistake myself(not in Eaton, it was much much scarier,but...), so Im more forgiving. It starts off easy and then gets steeper and steeper, their shoes were giving them trouble as the ground gets more crumbly, now its a long way down. Strangely enough, I found myself in a similar(yet harder) unplanned situation a few weeks ago(not the east fork SG river). The person had a good climbing aptitude and was able to climb out.
If the point of a rescue is to bail out someone in danger, this fits. A lot of rescues can be prevented, but S&R knows that. These people made a big mistake but came out uninjured...we have seen even this year how many fell and had serious injuries. I would agree that something should be done, as the government is more open to a lawsuit.
Now as far as the monkey business, its pretty much just that. A worn out route, from a high vandalism area, started with frayed thin ropes. Sort of obvious what you are getting yourself into, so if someone falls later on, there is little surprise?
