Waterman Question

I searched the forum and couldn't find a thread, and I'm guessing this has been addressed before, but...

Why does the USGS marker atop Mt. Waterman say "TWIN" instead of "WATERMAN?"

I can't answer that question (have always wondered about that myself), but can say the the WATERMAN I-8 benchmark is on the next bump to the east, along with at least two reference marks...those are much newer (1954 vs 1930, and were installed by LA County Surveyor vs US Geological Survey for TWIN...

The names on the bench marks and triangulation stations are to ID the marks, not whatever mountain they are on. These are for use by surveyors, so in the same manner they are not necessarily on the high point, but located where the sight lines are best.
