A Monrovia man the sheriff’s department said was canyoneering with friends above Johsondale died in an accident Sunday afternoon.

Kevin Westervoorde, 26, was in an area of the Kern River deemed dangerous and technically challenging.

According to the sheriff’s department, Westervoorde was floating down the river above Carson Falls. He failed to exit the river before the falls and was swept over treacherous rapids, the sheriff’s department said.

The sheriff’s department’s Search and Rescue team and personnel from the US Fire Service recovered Westervoorde’s body from the Kern River, according to the sheriff’s department.

Canyoneering is the sport of exploring canyons using different techniques such as climbing, rappelling, swimming, or rafting.

This is terrible. I have always dreaded the day this happens to someone who isn't a stranger. I'm so very sorry to hear this. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

With the tragic loss of my good friend Kevin I just wanted to let you know all know that he and the other members of his party successfully completed 7 tea cups without incident. The unfortunate accident happened at Carson Falls about 0.5 miles north of the Johnsondale Bridge. The Kern has taken a beloved friend that was truly unique; I am just grateful that the Kern did not take the lives of three of our friends that day.

Hi, Katie,

Thanks for filling us in.

Do you know if the fundraiser for Kevin is legitimate? I'm sure it is, but you never know these days.

I was wondering that myself. I haven't been able to confirm the legitimacy with anyone. No one in the caving community knows the lady who started the page.

Here is the information given to us regarding Kevin's Memorial Service:

Monday August 13, 2012 - Viewing from 6PM to 8PM
Tuesday August 14, 2012 - Service 10:30AM

Driving Instructions:
From the 210 Freeway in Monrovia:
Take the Mountain Ave EXIT and go north on Mountain Ave about 1 mile
Turn west (left) on Foothill Blvd and go about 3/4 mile
Funeral Home is on the south side of the street

It didn't seem quite right somehow. Had to ask.

The fundraiser is legitimate. I was talking via email with the lady organizing it for the Westervoorde Family.

Jim: Good to see you yesterday, Kevin's family thanks you for your kindness.

Taco: That picture with the bird is the best. You're the best. I'm glad that you got to do a few canyons with Kevin. I know he appreciated it.
