Arizona seems to have a lot of rabies incidents (relatively). I wonder why that is. It's pretty much non-existent in LA county.

It's been a number of years ago, but I gad an experience with a rabid bat. The public heath doctor said it was quite common in bat colonies. If one runs into a person or is out after the sun rises it most likely is rabid.

This is an old-ish article (2009) but it's interesting.

That is disturbing, especially this, "not just through biting and scratching but through simple socializing, as humans might spread a flu."cougarmagic wrote: ↑This is an old-ish article (2009) but it's interesting.

The public health doctor that gave a consult told me there have been previous non bite cases of rabies contracted by folks doing field studies of bats in heavily populated bat caves. They guessed the bacteria survived long enough in aerosols from airborne feces to be inhaled by humans.
Hey CM, Arizona was (and still is?) going through a rabies epidemic last year or the year before.cougarmagic wrote: ↑Arizona seems to have a lot of rabies incidents (relatively). I wonder why that is. It's pretty much non-existent in LA county.
2011 was fairly big year for bat rabies here in Los Angeles County. Simi Valley had a rabid bat case in 2011, also.
This is why rabies is considered a core vaccine for animals...
