Clothes, tools, technology, nutrition, training, techniques, etc.

to anyone (especially ze, who i think may have some science bites to add...)

just wondering if anyone on this board ever uses any supps for hiking/climbing/etc...? i've used a couple different ones in the past in the gym but don't really do much now... though recently i came across a bottle of powerbar's beta alanine supplement and i've felt pretty positive results of it. just curious.

what timing. I'm on the hunt in Colombia right now....

more seriously

caffeine, at the very least, reduces the rate of perceived exertion (less pain at certain pace, or go faster)

long hikes, you could intake a few hundred calories of fast acting carbohydrates per hour into blood (like GU, gatorade).

maintaining electrolyte levels...I wonder about if I get enough potassium on hikes, but just a thought

that's all for performance during a hike. I dont' really do that stuff on hikes (only unless i'm actually going nonstop). I do use caffeine for training purposes in the gym, though.

The real question is: do supplements work in closed areas of the forest?

I've been trying a new supplement. It's a called an "In-N-Out Burger." Not sure if I'm hiking any faster, but it sure feels good going down.

I think Zé should be banned. He's nothing but a trouble maker now.

Edit: add winking emoticon for the obtuse.

i was forced to chew on coca leaves and drink coffee today. i was ready to blitz up a mountain.

oh and I guess sodium bicarbonate could help buffer blood acidity, but not sure how well that works hour + endurance activity. never tried. Matt, why don't you try and tell us?

you should see these ostrich's that I was feeding. they're freaking aggressive. I wonder if they cheat and use coffee or cocaine to improve their reaction time to food display.

I'm glad you agree with me. I hope to have more converts who see the light. Soon, all supplements will be done away with, including food and water.

Pop-tarts, pringles and jalapeno cheese bread get it done for me.

Hammer Gel>>>>>>> Gu

Gu sucks. Gu has caffeine (some do) which dehydrates. Gu is gross.
Hammer is good tasting. Hammer is made up of puree. Hammer is wonderful.
