My two buddies who were going to hike Los Padres with me today had to bail last second...so, instead, I explored Monrovia Canyon for the first time today. I ended up traveling the Overturf Trail, which was pretty unique. Tons and tons of bear tracks... and I had a bit of a run in with a mountain lion  Anyone ever been up that trail?
I ended up taking that trail through to the dirt road and then going up another half mile before deciding I'd had enough (I did some MHR and interval training and that crapped me out... plus the bugs suuuucked). I put my TR up on the ol' blog http://pasadenahiker.wordpress.com/2011 ... urf-trail/

Nice area to hike in. Continuing past the nature center would have led to a nice set of falls.

Map.

Falling cougars? I don't remember seeing that in the weather report.

The waterfall in Monrovia Canyon is kinda cool. Super easy hike.

I like the Overturf Trail. Just a nice spot.

The Rankin kids used to hike that every day, both ways, to attend school in Monrovia.

You know why Sawpit Canyon is so named? Shocking: because they found a saw pit in the canyon. It is thought that it was used in the construction on Mission San Gabriel. (see saw pit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saw_pit)

Where did the Rankin kids live, PG? They must've had sick calves.

The Rankin family lived in Sawpit Canyon. Rankin Peak is just to the southwest of Monrovia Peak (http://www.peakbagger.com/peak.aspx?pid=-9320)
