I've done it once about 20 years ago....
Hike up Iron Mountain via the North Face.
Its one hell of a hike but doable.
Start from East Fork and head up the canyon to the Fish Fork cutoff. Head east and then head south up the north face.
There were 3 of us that wild day. Needless to say we had our asses in a sling by the time we got back to the cars. It was a 16 hour day and one I knew then I'd never try again.
A good friend had the general directions and they were spot on.

Want a real ass whipping?? Try it come day.

sounds like fun. at least you only have to go up that ridge. getting up into fish fork isn't too bad. ridge looks gnarly - saw a spot one could get onto the ridge earlier than described in hps routes

real ass whipping? have you tried this hike? the one person (LD) I know of who has done both indicates Triplet is a bit harder.

Ze, I've got a line up Triplet from the north. Requires winter. Should be easier, I guess. You'd lose a ton of elevation real quick to access it. NOT trying it from R39 anymore!

If you can get or borrow some crampons and an axe and you're motivated to try it, lemme know.

Yes...doesnt sound good at all. A Saturday hike and hes not back yet.

An eight to 10 member search and rescue team and a sheriff's helicopter are looking in the 6,151-foot level of Triplet Rocks, considered the most challenging hiking area in the forest.

Couldnt find anything of use. It seems like the plan is that team going down the ridge today and if they dont find him to escalate the search. Almost like saying a prayer for this guy...you know its been cold in that area overnight and it sounds like he left his sleeping gear at Twin Peaks...+ that ridge fogs over, scary stuff....didnt it rain Sat night?

Best way to do this hike? Join one of the local SAR teams and get a helicopter insertion and then hike back to ACH while looking for a missing hiker!

it rained friday night, don't know about saturday. definitely fogs over quickly in that area. if you aren't decently hip with navigation, you can quickly get off track...

Wow! Great, detailed account. Sounds like the guy really knew what he was doing but just had some bad luck that got worse. There is so little margin for error on these extreme hikes. But that's cool that he actually almost hiked back out on his own. The news reports made it sound like he was airlifted off the ridge. Also really cool is that his family has a picture of his boot tracks to give to the authorities.

Before Jody Noiron got the boot, she had the Triplet Rocks officially named in her honor: "Hear No Evil, See No Evil, & Speak No Evil". Rumor has it that she wanted to name them after the Shakespearean "Three Witches" from Macbeth, who represent "darkness, chaos, and conflict"; but Randy Moore & Tom Tidwell told her it was too obvious. The fourth and smaller rock she named Sgt. Schultz - it sees nothing.

My friend Henry, who went on this hike with me, successfully made the summit this time with a friend this past weekend. I don't think he posts on this forum, so just a FYI. It took them 23 hours

. Their register entry is the only one since the hiker who was on the ridge for 4 days.

C'mon guys, that register needs some more entries!
