This year, contractors will be working on the Switzers Picnic Area and Buckhorn Campground Recreation Site Improvement projects. These Recreation Sites will be closed to public access for an unspecified time period to allow the Contractor to complete the improvements in the shortest time period.

Charlton Flat Picnic Area will be open this summer, after the Contractor has completed some contractual work.

Motorcyclist killed in crash on Mt. Baldy Road

California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles County firefighters responded at 1:55 p.m. to Mt. Baldy and Shinn roads.
The collision shut down lanes in the area until about 6 p.m.

Remote Chantry Flat store fighting to stay in business

"We're kind of stuck between two bureaucracies," said Rich Conforti, the store's general manager.....
The store has submitted plans for how to get into compliance, but they have been rejected and will need to be revised, according to Ken Murray, a public health department enforcement official........
If renovations need to be done, the store will have to get permits and then submit the plan to the U.S. Forest Service, said Marty Dumpis, the deputy forest supervisor of the Angeles National Forest....."

The most extensive info ever on the area...unfortunately spread out of two threads and 79+ pages.

I forget the name of the Burro (or Burrow) Canyon miner, it's in one of the Robinson books. His cabin was torn down when the road was put in. Supposedly it's a hardrock mine, I've looked for it a couple of times, but my guess is that it's off to the right of the shooting range past that gated road. The owners there might know more. I've climbed down into the entrance of Burro and panned for a short distance. Found black sand and microgarnets, but no visible gold. I've also pulled off along the road and looked down into the creek. According to Robinson, there's visible mining gear, but I haven't seen anything.

Before Camp Follows was Camp Follows, the land was owned by Henry C. Roberts, who eventually purchased the Cecil Graham Claim adjacent to his property. Roberts ran a permanent store, and the prices and list of items for sale are published in one of the Robinson books as copied from an LA Star article. Roberts ran a mining camp, and people like Jacob Waltz worked the SGC Placers. Since Graveyard Canyon is directly across from the camp, it offered a straight forward route to the tops of the mountains. Why take this brutal route? Because during flood levels, the upper EF cannot accessed by a pack train. In the 19th century, there was no road, only a trail that criss-crossed the river dozens of times. How do you resupply tons of material to lets say the Native Son Mine on Prarie Fork?

In the 'Story of of Old Pegleg, Die He Did and How,' tells of starving miners at the Native Son Mine who were snowed in dreaming of their bean pots back home, and their decision to kill and eat Old Pegleg, the last bruin of the San Gabriels. There's another story about miners who bought some new fangled self-rising flour. When their heavily burdened beasts crossed the river, the flour got wet, causing the flour to rise, and the mules floated down the river. The San Gabriels were incredibly wild back then, and getting supplies into the mines was a major task, especially during the winter, when there was enough water for mining. For some of the hydraulic operations, they could only run for about 3 months during the rainy season. You have to see some of the old pictures of the pack trains, pretty impressive. The most obvious thing is that many men traveled together and they were armed to the TEETH. Every man carried (at a minimum) a rifle, revolver, and long knife. They all had horses and mules, and were very experienced hunters and trackers. I have not come across any reports of successful banditry of gold strongbox convoys out of the canyon, and no known reports of Union patrols in the canyon during the Civil War.

For the most part, the placers were worked out in a few years, and most people moved on. During the heyday, most miners took 0.1-0.5 oz gold/day. Keep in mind that a good daily wage was $1, with gold being sold for less than $20/oz. A Union Private fighting (and probably dying) back east earned $13/month. Tom George Driver and William ('Lyin' Bill) Potter successfully worked a very rich placer across from Devil's Canyon. Tom took over 2.25 pounds in nuggets just from the surface in a couple of hours solo when prospecting the canyon in the late 1850s. His company eventually employed 3 dozen men. That area was reworked in the 1930s by the SG Mining Company.

Devil's Canyon(Gulch) supposedly has good placer gold, and even better fishing. There's a hidden ledge to the right of the falls. The old timers would cut down a tree, trim the branches, and use it as a ladder with the head on the ledge. They called it 'Fat Man's Misery' because fat men had a hell of a time climbing up the tree. One Eye Mountain Charlie is buried at the entrance to the canyon, and mined Devil's with a partner. Recently, people have begun to re-explore Devil's. They report that it's overgrown, and filled with every type of animal and plant.

The earliest history of the site we know today as the Verdugo Hills Golf Course is shrouded in mystery....The Tongva Indians that lived here left little behind, having lived lightly on the land. They were semi-nomadic, having a central village, named Wikangna, but also relying heavily on seasonal camps that moved around the Valley as food sources and weather dictated....We know from Mission records that there were big villages, as I mentioned last week, at Hahamokngna, where JPL is today, and Tujungna, somewhere in Big Tujunga Canyon. But we know there was also one in CV, and that it was associated with La Tuna Canyon. Logically that puts the village at Las Barras Canyon, the name of the small canyon the golf course is situated in. That location had a spring, was well treed with oaks in a lush meadow, and was right next door to the huge oak forests that CV Park is but a remnant of. It was on the established trail (now Honolulu Avenue and Tujunga Canyon Boulevard) between Hahamokngna, Tujungna, and all the villages along the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains, plus it had easy access to the San Fernando Valley through La Tuna Canyon...

GLENDORA - A 21-year-old driver and his 19-year-old passenger were rescued by firefighters early Thursday after their car drove off Glendora Mountain Road and fell about 350 feet.
The two were injured and flown by helicopter to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Gibson, who declined to give his first name.
He said the driver and the woman passenger live in Glendora. He didn't know their current medical condition.
A vehicle over the side was reported about 12:05 a.m., just east of mile marker 7.
Gibson said the 1997 Saturn was heading west on Glendora Mountain Road and appeared to be going too fast when it went off the road.
The driver climbed up. He was helped by other drivers who saw the incident and stopped, Gibson said.
Firefighters responding to the call located the patients who were flown out about 1:40 a.m., a Los Angeles County fire dispatch supervisor said.
Glendora Mountain Road winds up the steep west side of Little Dalton Canyon as it enters the San Gabriel Mountains, east of San Gabriel Canyon.

Angeles Crest Hwy Update-work continues, SR-2 suffered heavy storm damage, expected to open mid to late Summer.

A helicopter crew has spotted a missing 57-year-old hiker alive and apparently in good condition near a waterfall on Mount Baldy, according to San Bernardino County sheriff's officials
The discovery was reported at 7:42 a.m. today. A ground team is enroute to guide the man to the search's command post at Mount Baldy Fire Department.
Jack Rhee was last seen about 12:30 p.m. Monday when he began hiking from Sierra Ski Hut to Mount Baldy, said sheriff's spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire.
Rhee was carrying water, but was lightly dressed and isn't an experienced hiker, according to initial reports. His wife reported him missing at 8:52 p.m. Monday.
Rhee had a cell phone with him, but attempts to contact him were stymied, at least initially, because his wife didn't know the number and couldn't find it in her cell phone because the battery was completely discharged, Wiltshire said.
Within 90 minutes of the report, his car was found in the area and seven ground searchers had been assigned to the rescue attempt.

Man seriously injured in Wrightwood head-on crash

The California Highway Patrol received a call at 5:16 a.m. about the crash on Highway 138 at Lone Pine Canyon Road, said CHP Officer Steven Cuevas. A man in a Pontiac struck a tractor trailer head on.
The impact trapped the Pontiac driver in his vehicle. Firefighters rescued the man from the vehicle and he was taken to a hospital for treatment.

LYTLE CREEK – With another fire season underway, the Forest Service is rushing to complete the rehabilitation of the area burned in last year’s largest fire. The Sheep Fire covered more than 7100 acres between Lytle Creek and Wrightwood. Forest service spokesman John Miller says erosion caused by the winter rains wasn’t the only problem.
“We had problems with some of our roads in the burn area and we’ve been working on those.” Unwanted plants such as mustard and Russian thistle are being uprooted. “We have put the AmeriCorps crews in there to give the existing native plants a chance to recover.”

While soaring in high winds near Mount Baden-Powell in the San Gabriel Mountains, they flew into a violent downdraft. It appears that the sailplane was trapped in the canyon and the pilot was attempting a landing in the wash at the bottom when it hit trees on final approach. The man is identified as Bell resident David Fetui, according to Lt. Fred Corrall, of the Los Angeles County Coroner's Investigations Division. Fetui jumped about 25 feet from a rock, walked out of the water and collapsed, Corrall said. The man was airlifted to a local hospital where he died of his injuries, officials said.

The car was driven by a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service volunteer worker.
Klein, who was seriously injured and had to retire from his job, sought to sue the government, which owned the land and was allegedly the employer of the volunteer whose car hit Klein."

"A stream that serves rare wildlife in the San Gabriel Mountains dried up this week after a local utility company diverted the water away for a pipe test. That prompted the U.S. Forest Service to send a cease and desist letter to Lincoln Avenue Water Company, according to the Pasadena Star-News.
The stream tends to dry up in the Summer, but gradually over the season, not in a matter of hours like it did on Tuesday. After the cease and desist was served, water was again flowing, but the host at Millard Canyon Campground was concerned about the survival of rare newts and frogs that live off the stream"

"The California Highway Patrol said Eller was a passenger in a 2010 Mazda whose driver lost control of the vehicle on Lone Pine Canyon Road near Swarthout Canyon Road about 1 a.m.
Officers said the driver, Daniel Sigala, 20, of Phelan, was traveling at least 50 mph east on Lone Pine Canyon when he made a turn and struck an embankment. The Mazda overturned and Eller was partially thrown out of the car. He and the driver were both wearing seatbelts.
Eller received major injuries in the rollover and died at Desert Valley Hospital at 2:27 a.m., San Bernardino County coroner's officials said. Sigala left the scene without contacting law enforcement. A friend took him to Desert Valley Hospital for treatment."

A 17-year-old girl was transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital on Monday night at 6:15 p.m. after she fell while hiking with other teens in Upper Big Tujunga near Camp Colby.
“The teen had fallen and [appeared] to have a broken arm and leg,” said Sgt. Michael Stuver of the Crescenta Valley Sheriff’s Station.
Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Air Rescue Five helicopter deputies responded to the waterfalls in “The Narrows” below Camp Colby in Angeles National Forest. The 17-year-old victim was located at the base of a large waterfall, falling about 25 feet onto the rocks below. A paramedic was lowered to the victim and she was hoisted into the aircraft. She was treated by paramedics and transported to Huntington Memorial Hospital, according to responders.U.S. Forest Service and Los Angeles County Fire personnel hiked into the area to assist. "The race starts with a long descent. The first 5.7 miles are down Mt. Wilson Road to the dirt road turn-off at Red Box.......At Shortcut, I grabbed my baggie of Infinit powder from my drop bag and was psyched to see Dominic Grossman take it from me and fill up my bottles - one with water and one with the Infinit and water. I grabbed a couple more potato pieces dipped in salt. ....I got to the last aid station at Westfork (27.5 miles) and no one was in sight in front or behind me. I knew that it was just five miles to the finish. Five miles straight up the Kenyon Devore Trail. I filled both bottles, took some salt pills and a couple pieces of potato and off I went....This climb is a bitch. I still don't think it's as tough as some other recent climbs I've done, but it's plenty hard, especially 27 miles in! ....."

"....I arrive at mom’s house just in time to help her burn down the canyon. Yes, you read that right, she torched the Little Tujunga Canyon all by herself.Why you may ask? Oh it’s very logical. She was lighting mosquito citronella incense coils and instead of blowing out the flame to let the smoke smoulder and do it’s job of chasing off mosquitos, she let the flame burn high and strong. So high and so strong that it torched the canyon.

As I’m surrounded by 4ft flames on all sides with my back to a propane tank and nothing but a shovel, she brings me…… ice.No, not water.No, not a fire extinguisher…. ice. Meanwhile, the flames have spread down into the canyon about 30 yards, and is on it’s way up the hill onto the bounding neighbors yards. I choose to fight the flames closest to the propane tank, at least I can stave off an explosion, if nothing else. Mom, in the meantime, is lining the fence with…. ice."

"As soon our group of about 30 riders rolled out of the driveway, another motor cop eye balled us like he was salivating over a porterhouse steak, shaking his head like he couldn’t believe we were still going to attempt the ride up the mountain.....We continued on Sierra Madre, riding at the speed limit in hopes the CHP would leave us alone, but more and more patrol cars were parked curbside and additional motor cops and patrols began emerging from side streets like a pack of sharks circling a school of fish. There were at least ten of them, all positioned to go in for the kill when ready. ...We ended up avoiding the mountain all together and headed for another gas station on Lone Hill, where we waited for our demoralized friends to arrive with freshly written tickets.Jon, SBC’s own Community Manager, and “Motosikal” (who came in a Hummer with drinks and snacks by the way. Good man!) headed up the mountain in their “chase vehicles” (cages) to check out the scene at Kodak Point. It turns out a crowd was accumulating at the turn out to “wait out the cops.” ...."

When the ranger opened the door, he was struck in the face with an unknown object and knocked unconscious, according to Capt. Mike Parker of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau....."

"Officials said a man and woman in possession of high-powered rifles took police on a chase on the 10 Freeway on Monday morning after robbing an Azusa shooting range.
The suspects were taken into custody on the westbound 10 Freeway around 7:10 a.m., about 40 minutes after the pursuit began, after one of the rear tires on their pickup truck blew out, police said.
The suspects entered Burro Canyon Shooting Range in Azusa around 6:30 p.m. and fired a couple of rounds, demanding all the weapons, witnesses told police. An official with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said they were able to get away with only accessories because the store's guns were locked up......"

"A powerful show of lightning roared off the backside of the San Gabriel Mountains toward Barstow and Fort Irwin Tuesday afternoon with over 1,000 recorded strikes lighting up the sky.
A Hesperia weather spotter for the National Weather Service said the lightening display was still going as late at 9: 45 p.m.
There were no reports of damage.
The "thunderstorm complex started around 4 p.m." said National weather Service Forecaster Mark Moede. "We're are in a monsoon pattern so its not unusual for this to occur in this pattern."

"What it is: Sherpa Jonnie summarized this route quite well when after 3 hours of making our way through thick brush and loose boulders he exclaimed “This hike is balls”. It is. We can’t say we weren’t warned though; this traverse is ranked as one of the best mountaineering routes in the San Gabriel’s.......We tried to do this as an out-and-back to avoid a car shuttle. BAD IDEA. After a couple hours of bushwhacking we decided we were going to call a cab to pick us up at Heaton Flats. Idiots right? No cell service in the Sheep Wilderness. Duh....."
