Palm Springs police and fire officials called in a helicopter to pick up an injured hiker from the San Jacinto Mountains on Tuesday, officials said.

Police Sgt. Mitch Spike said a man and woman were hiking near the top of the Museum Trail, which ascends into the mountains from the Palm Springs Art Museum, 101 N. Museum Drive, when the woman fell and was injured.

The woman had a minor leg injury that prevented her from hiking down, fire officials said.

The police and fire departments were called to help get the injured woman down from the mountain at about 10:45 a.m., Spike said.

Six people from the fire department hiked up to the woman's location with medical equipment, and four people from the police department's search and rescue team also assisted with the rescue, fire officials said.

The woman was airlifted off the mountain by a helicopter and checked again by an ambulance crew, but she declined to be taken to a local hospital, fire officials said.
