Another tip that came up last year, and the year before, and a million prior, is if you expect snow, and you're going for a hike/whatever, bring crampons and an axe! Things turn icy at night, etc.

I am planning to spend the night west ridge of the baldy bowl Wed. night. Should be fun and I will let you know what I find.

So, any news? I heard it was too warm and we barely got anything. The Mountain High cams weren't promising, just some light snow.

well it did snow pretty good above the hut Wed-Thursday this week. It was falling as low as 7000 feet with over a foot at 9,000 feet. Just enough for me to break in my new snowshoes once I was across the bowl. http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=3 ... d=68602558

We changed our plans and hiked Ice House to Timber via the Ridge and then headed to the saddle between Telegraph and "Chapman Mt." before descending one of the avy chutes to the Chapman Trail. We actually donned the 'pons on the ridge descent, even though the snow was soft.

I would have just hated it if you guys & gals were reading about a hiker -- with crampons and a helmet attached to his pack -- found in the spring after being reported missing since Thanksgiving....

Yeah I often think of that when I am on one of my more technical approaches of a rock climbing trip. It would read "dumb-ass falls to his death with $2,000 of climbing gear on his back."

Good choice. It only takes one icy step to mess things up real bad.

From last weekend, some reported the snow level down to 9000 ft on south facing slopes. What do you think the level is on north facing slopes (like between Baldy & Dawson)?

How much do you think the conditions have changed (and will) from last weekend to now - Saturday?

Looking at the weather, http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.ph ... it=0&lg=en, it hasn't been super warm, so there's probably still some snow/ice on the ground. There's some steep stuff and drop offs over there, particularly on the approach to Pine. Maybe you'd be OK, but I'd probably play it fairly conservatively. Bring z ice gear.

Yeah I don't think it's gonna work up around Baldy. Was thinking about Hawkins where highest point will be < 9000 ft, but still probably some stuff there. Not with a group of hikers.

the only south-facing snow i saw yesterday was on the very tip top of Baldy and some little crack on Harwood.

lowest north facing i'd say is 7,500. last sunday it was about 6,900 on the north face near islip saddle, and it;s been a week soo...

i hope you brought crampons

Gorgonio had quite a bit of snow on the upper southern slopes yesterday ..

Also look at Kathy's Pix from Baldy yesterday, good view of general conditions on nothern and southern slopes ..

Accweather says no rain/nothing except colder weather. In was just another bogus fakeout forecast for rain/snow...although there still may be a coastal shower late Sun night....dont worry, the forecast is for rain/snow on Dec 19th!

Im sure the TV "meterologists" who have been predicting rain for weeks now will admit they were wrong 8) ....Im still sticking to my forecast of below normal precipitation in SoCal until NorCal gets more rain! We need regular weather patterns, not some freak storm halfway to Hawaii giving us a headfake.
