Re: History question: Neil Armstrong's cabin in the SGs

No, I never uncovered anything more specific than Juniper Hills. The google trail did have some interesting reading though. Apparently his wife taught practically every kid in Juniper Hills how to swim. Someone had a scan of his completion certificate signed by her.

LOL, we have been up Smith (years ago, in the rain), but we weren't really outfitted for it today. We drove home and had hot chocolate on the deck while viewing the snow on the mountains.

Re: SR-39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road)

Road closure misinformation so annoying Caltrans road conditions conditions search had nothing for the 39 this morning, nor was there anything shown on their QuickMap. Sign at the bottom of the canyon said "Open to Crystal Lake.". Yet at the Valley of the Moon it was closed at about 11:30...

It was open as of June 23; that's all I got. It does seem to me there's been a change of philosophy and it's open in worse condition the last couple years.

Re: Gallery of auto parts found on 3N39 to Lupine

Now this is my kind of post! Is the road actually rough, or are there vehicles there that have no business being on that road? The road actually was pretty rough in the rockfall area, even given that it's always a rockfall. It had some large dropoffs that would be challenging in the arrival/departu...

Big Falls (near Lopez Lake)

We were on vacation in SLO county in early July and decided to try Big Falls since we have a vehicle suitable for the 18 water crossings necessary to reach the trailhead. This old LA Times article is as good as any. I was surprised how many residences and, it seems, pot farms there are a good ways d...

Gallery of auto parts found on 3N39 to Lupine

On June 23, we parked at Guffy and walked down to Lupine to check the road condition. Down near the rockfall we found this. Looks like a cover that goes around a light. DSC01386.jpg On the way back, most of the way back to Guffy (above the Blue Ridge Rd/3N39 split), this was in the middle of the roa...

Baden-Powell glider friend

We did Mt. Baden-Powell from Vincent Gap, and a glider was tooling around after we passed the 3 mile marker. It made a very unique noise. After a while, he went off to the west. DSC01474.JPG Then when we were sitting on the peak having a snack, he sailed right overhead and tipped his wings "hel...

We drove the entire length La Cañada to Wrightwood today. They had reportedly re-closed Islip Saddle to Vincent Gap yesterday for the storm, but re-opened it this morning. Rocks were fairly numerous after Buckhorn or so.

Journey with me to April 2009. I was the world's worst couch potato. I had been that kid who got picked last for teams in P.E. and I hated exertion in all its forms. With a metabolism to get away with it, there was no motivation to be any different. I had lived in Sierra Madre 17 years, able to see ...

LA county seems to have been generally pretty good, but I'm not sure at all why they've been reporting on Hwy 39 at all, as I thought that was Caltrans' domain, and they've contradicted Caltrans there, so I'm not sure whom to trust. If current eyewitness reports like Newcomb's or Crystal Lake Cafe a...

I was up there yesterday. The 2 was closed between Red Box and Upper Big T. (Well, we didn't see the closure at Red Box with our own eyes, but that's what I understand). We had to go in from Sunland via Big T -> AFH -> Upper Big T -> ACH. Gate at Kratka was closed on the ACH. CA DOT has been putting...

Thanks for the ideas. Lukens was intriguing because somehow I've never gotten there, but we didn't get the earliest start and so opted for out the front door and up to Sturtevant Falls. I'll keep the Lukens option in mind, though.

Front Door to Sturtevant Falls via closed Chantry Rd. 19 Jan 2019

We took the hyperlocal option for a hike that had some chance of being passable after the storms, and headed out the front door to the closed Chantry Rd., about 1 mile. Lots of hikers and bikers parking on Arno and doing this now (many not going all the way). 3.25 miles from the gate to Chantry Flat...

Name a trail in good condition weekend of 19 Jan 2019

I see that the rain did a number on the Mt Wilson trail and the Nat'l Weather Service is is citing 10.27 inches of rain over 5 days at Camp Hi Hill near Red Box, so I suspect a lot of trails in our crumbly mountains are messed up. We're not really scramblers, so is anyone aware of a trail that is in...

Warm enough on Friday 1/4 that we made the bike ride up, a federal shutdown tradition! We saw a group of overnighters, a number of other bicyclists (some did multiple trips to the helipad & back), and also groups of walkers. There are some vehicles with gate access, so stay alert.

Re: Chantry Rd closed 27 Dec 2018

Supposedly the govt shutdown affects water purification, so they decided to close the whole road. ? Brilliant reasoning. In the 2013 shutdown they shut it without any rationalization other than government shutdown. We had a nice bike ride with it closed. Little too cool today for me to want to be c...

There's a sign up that says something like closed by order of US Forestry. It had been open the first weekend of the gov't shutdown, but I guess someone eventually got the bright idea to close it.

Thank you! ❤ the little tanager lady. The female pictured in my go-to ID book was less yellow and lacked the white below the wing, but indeed the wing bars excluded most any other candidate.

Blurry photo of a cute yellow bird spotted on the Mt Wilson Trail, 2 September. Not a match for my usual local yellow friends. Is it possibly a female western tanager?

Hey Pat, or anyone else familiar, where do you pick up the Prarie Fork trail (such as it is) from Cabin Flat to Mine Gulch? Dreadfully behind in going through photos again. This is from 30 June, between Lupine and Cabin Flat on the decommissioned part of 3N39. Black bear?
