The knock on machetes is the risk of hitting a rock and sparking a fire. But I don't know what the likelihood is nor do I know if they are effective. @Taco (for one) has mentioned a machete before - maybe he'll chime in.

Try Smith Mtn. - either from the 39 trailhead or Bear Cyn. if it is clear.

It's the exciting section of that ridge. Probably many people have that photo. And Elwood knew exactly where it was :) The first time I was on this trail (around 1989'ish), it was at this point on the trail when some hotshot pilot out of Vandeburg in some fighter jet flew directly over me at mach 5...
