Re: Iron Mountain <3 Hours - 11/10/07

Correct about the photos. I've been following the Big Horn Ridge thread with some interest since I at one time had considered it as well. I got to see it from 3 different perspectives on Saturday: From the Heaton Flat trail, from the Glendora Ridge, and from Lookout Mountain. The upper half looks t...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

I think I'll plan to go up the Ski Hut Trail Sunday morning and stroll on over to the top of the Big Horn Ridge. Edit: Switching to Saturday 10th because I can and because I like the weather outlook better. Oh well. Only made it as far up as the ski hut this morning so...no new info. Mid 40's and w...

Perhaps a good weekend to go to the top and look down the ridge. I think I'll plan to go up the Ski Hut Trail Sunday morning and stroll on over to the top of the Big Horn Ridge.

Edit: Switching to Saturday 10th because I can and because I like the weather outlook better.

ANF will be open this upcoming weekend!

Any planned assaults on Big Horn Ridge this Sunday (11th)? Which approach route? I might be able to tag along for part of the way.

Re: Twin Peaks - Hard Routes

Looking down on the East Ridge from East Twin a couple of years ago made me curious so I did a bit of research. Came across these Sierra Club reports ( 1 , 2 ) about an attempt at reaching Triplet Rocks (which is along the ridge). Just throwing this out there in case you hadn't seen it before. After...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

I have to admit, Tom's photos make me feel the need to rethink this hike, but I think our route to the west will be better. Pics make it look very steep getting out of Cattle Canyon up the east side of the ridge. The east side looks less brushy though than the west side of the ridge. West side look...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

Thanks Travis. The last 4 miles look brutal...~5300' in ~4 miles.

My guess is the actual mileage might be a bit longer due to unaccounted for zig-zagging required to go up the ridge.

I doubt I could make 8000', but I'd be willing to be a water pack mule up to about 5000' :D !

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

Why not just descend the ridge first? That way you know exactly what your challenge is...or is that considered cheating for this idea? :) I personally wouldn't want to cliff out and have to hike/bushwhack back up. Not sure that would be too big of a worry on this ridge though. Hmm...maybe send out ...

Re: Mt. Baldy via Big Horn Ridge?

I noticed on the topozone maps that there is a trail from Coldwater Canyon up to Eagle Mine and then on up to the San Antonio Ridge (about half way between Iron and Baldy). That also looks very very interesting. Any info on whether that trail is real or not?

I never have hiked in the Verdugos. I'd be interested in learning some good loops.

I initially was thinking Lukens was eligible for a legal hike this weekend but after looking at some maps, I think Lukens is in the ANF. *grumble*

Re: Angeles National Forest Closure - October 23

You'll quickly enter into the Angeles National Forest (ANF) if you head up the Mt. Wilson Trail out of Sierra Madre - even before you hit First Water. You can get up to Henninger Flats from Eaton Canyon Nature Center via the "horse trail" and Mt. Wilson Toll Road without entering the ANF. ...

Also, curious to see the pics of Hasting's. Thanks in advance for posting!

Re: Pallet, Will Thrall and surrounding Peaks - Oct 20th

Buckhorn Peak is now called Mt. Akawie by the Sierra Club.

Goodykoontz is what the Sierra Club calls a heretofore unnamed peak south east of Pallett. It is just north of the FROG zone (map) (pdf files).
