Re: Lost Hiker-Los Padres Tar Creek

Might be worth a shot. Ya never know. Somewhat tangential comment: When my dad went missing in 2004, I spent a lot of time watching the SAR op. What struck me was that the full time sheriff's deputies who were the SAR coordinators, knew far less than the individuals on the teams that were out in the...

Re: Recreational Shooting

Most places in the ANF are off limits to recreational shooting. They had some areas available in the past, but there were so many problems with the areas getting utterly trashed, that they closed some or all off them down. I don't know if any "open shooting" areas exist anymore.

If you ever get the chance to go from Dough Flat into the Condor Refuge, pass on it. I once spent three days there in 1984 -- on a one day hike. David Stillman excepted. :)

Re: Lost & Found

A PCT Through Hiker that I know just looked for my ring earlier today, but he didn't find the two large jobsite type tool chests. It occurs to me that maybe I just got lucky with spotting them in the trees, so I wrote up a hopefully better, more detailed description below. I hope this is clearer. Fe...

Yeah, no worries. There's just a grizzly bear that could kill you in the blink of an eye arm's length away.

Wow. That's a scary one, the incident with the sleeping bag. I wonder what made the bear do that? Spilled food? Poor kid; he'll never want to go camping again. I wonder if pepper spray in any of those incidents would have helped? I have to admit that I'm not very afraid of bears. I mean I kn...

Re: Henninger Flats Bear Encounter - May 2014

The problem with the Ursack is that you may wind up with chili tuna peach compote! :P With a bear saliva garnish! Mmmm! Yum! The most important thing with bears is preventing them from getting a food reward. If a bear gets a food reward, he may become increasingly aggressive and have to be put down...

Re: Redwoods in San Gabriel Mountains

There are some nice coast redwoods at Descanso Gardens. Worth a visit. But not native. Camp Radford in the San Bernardino Mtns has a grove of mountain redwoods. Not native. Not doing well last I checked (around 2001). There's a single tree by the Crystal Lake visitor center as I recall. Not native. HJ

Re: Henninger Flats Bear Encounter - May 2014

Yeah, once a bear gets your food, you're pretty much screwed. In the bear's mind, it's his, and he will fight to keep it. You've got to scare a bear off before it breaches your "defenses" (hanging food in trees, Ursack, etc.). The only one you don't have to scare a bear off on is a bear ca...

Re: Redwoods in San Gabriel Mountains

Are there Redwoods in the San Gabriels? There are a few, but those have been planted by people. There are no native redwoods in Southern California; neither coast redwoods (Sequoia sempervirens) or mountain redwoods (Sequoiadendron giganteum). The large trees near Cooper Canyon, Buckhorn, etc. are ...

Re: Henninger Flats Bear Encounter - May 2014

Hi, 'Noid, nice to see you over this way. I have read about black bear attacks. The fact that a person gets mauled instead of killed is of little comfort to me. Interesting that about 80% were solo men. However, in all of the black bear encounters I've personally had, and I've had several out on the...

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails

Short of having a sheriff's deputy patrolling the area on a regular basis, I think they're engaging in wishful thinking. The kind of rowdies that party and carouse up there aren't going to be deterred by a sign. Still, it might save a few like that one gal who died up there recently who was apparent...

Re: Henninger Flats Bear Encounter - May 2014

Attacks by black bears are very rare. A lot of the people who got "attacked" did something stupid like try to pet a cute little bear cub. A mama bear *will* attack if she thinks you're messing with her cub. Do NOT get between a mama and a cub, cute though they may be. Here's a photo of a b...

Re: Henninger Flats Bear Encounter - May 2014

Well, I think you could probably relax a little on this one. :) First, even if the bear is brown in color, there are no grizzlies left in the wild here in California. All we have are "black" bears (Ursus Americanus), even though their color ranges from a "cinnamon" almost blondis...
