Re: Baldy 1-17-10

Great shots! This may be a dumb question but I assume the Register Ridge trail is found by taking the ridge to the immediate right after the register on the ski hut trail -- then just follow the ridge? I am getting tired of the same old ski hut trail and want to find something new to do in the bowl ...

Re: Mt Shasta in 2010

Casaval Ridge -- January 3, 2010 With more snow on it's way now through next Friday, the ridge is shaping up for a good early spring season. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/gallery.myff.org/gallery/687690/phoca_thumb_l_MtShasta010310.jpg PS: Just signed up for Rainier with IMG - May 21-24. Re: "Dark Summit" by Nick Heil

Just checked it out from the library. . .

Another good book is "Dead Lucky" -- it is Lincoln Hall's own account of his 2006 climb and rescue the day after David Sharp died next to Tsewang Paljor "Green Boots".

Re: Another Accident on Baldy - 12/27

It is really good to know that SAR is free. I had the impression that it would be like an ambulance ride that you (or hopefully insurance) would end up paying for. Not cheap! Now that I know that, I guess I can ditch my heavy ice axe and crampons and replace them with YakTrax and one trekking pole w...

Re: Another Accident on Baldy - 12/27

I appreciate your response and correction to my report. I did not see the fall so I relied on the climber's own words and in his own estimation he felt abandoned on the mountain with some serious down climbing still to do. I apologize if I mischaracterized your effort - I am glad you tried to help! ...

Another Accident on Baldy - 12/27

On Sunday I took my brother-in-law up Baldy for his first winter mountaineering experience and we saw first hand how dangerous the mountains can be - especially if you are unprepared and make poor choices. After climbing the west side of the bowl face (out of the trees but not up any of the chutes) ...

Re: Baldy Accident - Lessons Learned

I agree with the thought. . . I am a rescue diver and keep current on my certifications and its always the best idea to go prepared. You need to always take the basic items you might need to survive -- you don't dive without air and you don't rock climb without protection (unless you're a little cra...

Re: Mt Shasta in 2010

Looks like we've got the beginning of a group. . . I have wanted to climb Shasta for a few years and I have never made it up there, but this is the year. I have never climbed the mountain but I have done a lot of research and the main route up is Avalanche Gulch - it seems pretty straight forward an...

Mt Shasta in 2010

I am thinking of climbing Mt Shasta sometime from late March to early May. If anyone else is interested in doing this too, maybe we should do it as a group. -Greg

Re: Taco Thursday at Baldy Bowl 12-17-09

Awesome! Looks like you all had a great time! It's strange, at dinner tonight I was telling my brother-in-law about winter climbing and the gear needed and I mentioned a helmet and that surprised him so I told him about Ryan's rock accident on lighting and then I get on here tonight to see the "...

It looks like you had way more fun than my uneventful walk up Baldy. I hope the early start to the season means good things are in store for the winter!

Re: Devil's Backbone Trail (Mt. Baldy)

Thanks. Didn't go climbing just went snowboarding with the kids. However, when we were in the Baldy parking lot I saw 5 guys that looked like they were going hiking so I asked them where they were going. . . they said Devil's Backbone. . .none of them had ice axes or crampons, just snow shoes. . .an...

Devil's Backbone Trail (Mt. Baldy)

I went skiing at Mt Baldy today and rode chair 4 to the top -- this should be close the where the Devil's Backbone trail begins. Can someone point me in the right direction? Has anyone broken the trail yet this winter? I have done the Ski Hut/Bowl/Summit about 30 times but I have never done the back...
