Re: Red Top

Nicely done, I'm curious what the next goal is too!

Traveling through that kind of boulder filled terrain is exhausting but so much fun! Great pictures too.

Re: Appalachain Trail, Virginia - Snickers Gap to Ashby Gap out and back

Haven't found one yet and have been a little discouraged from looking further, though I have seen a food truck nearby that I need to check out. On the plus side there are several Ethiopian restaurants within walking distance! The shelter system seems like a mixed bag. On the one hand it would be nic...

Re: Appalachain Trail, Virginia - Snickers Gap to Ashby Gap out and back

Topographic prominence or die! Tekewin - The leaves weren't as slippery as I expected and 2/3 of the trail was pretty dry, but I'm sure it would be different after a recent rain! Toe smashing is certainly a concern and did mildly happen a couple times, luckily my current pair of shoes have decent to...

Appalachain Trail, Virginia - Snickers Gap to Ashby Gap out and back

This was back on November 7th, but I'm finally getting around to writing it up now. I was anxious to finally get out of town and do some hiking after my move from SoCal, but as a west coast elitist I continue to thumb my nose at the lack of high peaks in this part of the country. When I saw there wa...

Re: San Gabriel Death March (long trip report and photos in comments)

Well I suppose there aren't exactly bylaws for the challenge, and supported and unsupported times have always been separated in more formalized bike hiking challenges (FKTs on big thru hikes etc). Then you have to decide if caching your own supplies ahead of time is allowed or not (self supported vs...

Re: San Gabriel Death March (long trip report and photos in comments)

As I said at the time, any semi competent ultra runner with some mountain skills would easily beat my time. That said, it's isn't a race so I'm just glad to see a few more people do it so I enjoy some trip reports! Finishing it in one go is a cool accomplishment regardless of time. I almost replied ...

Re: FUNGUS?

Fungi are indeed super weird. In some alternate reality where I became a biologist, I'd probably want to focus on fungi because they are so strange. That one does look a little like a snake at a glace, and then it kind of looks like a pile of baked goods. Your post reminded me to post a few photos I...

Fungus of the Eastern US

Been in the DC area for about two months now and missing SoCal! I haven't had a chance to do any real hiking or get out of town, but have at least been spending a fair bit of time running in nearby Rock Creek Park . I have come up with a groundbreaking scientific theory: West + dry = cactus, East + ...

Nice report! I always wanted to do this from that side before I moved because it looked exciting from PCH. Sounds like it was a little more straightforward than it looks, but glad you got a little class 3 in along the way! Do you think it would be worth going back and trying some of the other ridges...

After multiple people I had vague connections to via work flaked out even at $500, I posted it on craigslist and sold it the next day for $750. Score!

I'll miss that car though, it's kind of fun to have a beater!

Re: Heaton Flat to Baldy summit loop up Big Horn Ridge and down San Antonio Ridge - trip report and photos

You just picked a line, and it ended up working, right? Pretty much! I did see that bit of old trail above Widman, but since it didn't seem to connect to anything and was so low anyway I didn't bother checking it out. I figured a direct line one way or the other would work a lot better. I didn't se...

Heaton Flat to Baldy summit loop up Big Horn Ridge and down San Antonio Ridge - trip report and photos

I'm moving to the east coast at the end of the week, so this was my final hike here! ? I had to make it a good one! Re: Triplet Rocks from below via Bear Creek - trip report and photos

you were probably too tired or focused to get many shots of the final approach. Yeah, this is often one of the tricky parts about documenting a route, on the hard or tricky stuff you are too busy to worry about taking pictures! Plus in some of the steep rocky sections it's hard to get a picture tha...

Re: Triplet Rocks from below via Bear Creek - trip report and photos

I agree that going from Smith Mountain would probably be the easiest way. I don't know what the section of Bear Creek is like above where the trail meets the creek (through quads 1 and 36), but I seem to recall others doing at least part of it. Doing it during a low water time of year would probably...

Triplet Rocks from below via Bear Creek - trip report and photos

Triplet Rocks! This one has been on my list for some time, so I'm pretty stoked to have made it and also to have done so via a non-standard route. For this trip I teamed up with Dima, who had checked out a different possible route last December. The plan this time was to drop in from the Twin Peaks ...

Re: Heaton Flats to Fish Fork (Iron Mtn. North Ridge Attempt) - Which Gully to Take?

It does seem a bit tricky to find, when I did the north ridge (report in this thread ) I picked the wrong one and had a pretty rough time getting up to the ridge. That said, if you leave early enough (i.e. a bit before 1:40pm!) you can probably find a workable route with a bit of willpower, even if ...
