Training
After being ill for most of the winter and getting pretty out of shape, I'm doing some emergency training now. About four nights a week, I hike this 7.6 mile route . I get out there after work and it takes about 2.25 hours. It's mostly downhill for the first half of the hike, then steeply uphill for...
Re: jury duty
My father was a cop. He will never sit on a jury. Counsel for the defense will always boot an ex-cop. I once showed up for a capital trial. I truthfully told them I opposed the death penalty and they sent me on my way. I was once part of the pool for a civil sexual harassment suit. During selection,...

Re: How many Peaks?
I actually have no idea. There are tons of minor peaks all over the place that people have probably never climbed/hiked, especially in the San Gabriel Wilderness. I betcha there isn't a single square meter of the San Gabriel Mountains that hasn't been climbed, hiked, crawled over, mined or slept on...

Re: Costa Mesa A16 Closed
A16 closing will probably take the Camp down with it, unless the bike shop can keep it alive. I thought the Lab was a great concept: inexpensively convert an old industrial building into an off-beat shopping center. But then with the Camp I think Shaheen Sadeghi probably spent too much money on an i...

Re: Big packs
Out of curiosity, what exactly does one put in a 95 liter pack? What I pack ( bold face notes stuff I also carry on day hikes): o Food and toiletries (toothpaste and toothbrush, soap, etc) in an Ursack. o Clothing: fleece jacket , windbreaker , spare socks (2 pairs), spare underwear, cold weather s...

Re: Big Iron Mountain 4/18/09
At the Coldwater Saddle we found what appeared to be road reflectors glued to a bunch of boulders... thought it was quite strange. Would they be useful for trail navigation at night? Someone has place reflectors in the foliage along the trail down from Rabbit Peak in the Anza Borrego wilderness. Yo...

I bought a Gregory Whitney 95 last year. Used it twice and hated it (it's for sale now, if anyone wants one). So over the weekend I ordered an Osprey Aether 85 (I had a 25% discount coupon from REI). http://media.rei.com/media/708315.jpg I'm just loving my little Osprey Stratos day pack more and mor...

San Bernardino Peak overnight 6-7 June
If anyone is interested, I have posted with the OCHBC an overnight backpacking trip to San Bernardino Peak in the San Gorgonio Wilderness. I'll be staying at Limber Pine Bench, in my opinion the finest trail camp site in the Wilderness Area. Details here . I think you have to be an OCHB member to se...

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)
Except in the Vivian Creek area in the San Gorgonio Wilderness, I look at bearproofing mostly as a matter of bear training; the bears aren't really a problem, and won't be so long as they never learn to get food from backpackers. So I'll always advise my noobs to bring and use bearproof containers. ...

I'm going to be leading a couple groups of noob backpackers up to Kelly's Camp this summer and I was wondering if anyone had any advice concerning this particular camp. Maybe I'm wrong but wasn't there a time when the type of person who took the effort to hike was the type of person who did not litter and otherwise leave their garbage behind? You are wrong. Until the seventies the backcountry looked like a giant dump, people left their trash and garbage everywhere...
