Re: Name that peak! Visual Trivia.

From Winston pk with saddle between Kratka ridge and Waterman's long east ridge? Does it have an official name?
Correct again - I don't know that the saddle has a name, but you've identified it exactly. Nice.

I'm gonna have to think about your pic for a minute...

Re: Name that peak! Visual Trivia.

South Mt. Hawkins?
Yes! Well done. The prize is yours! You're it.

For extra credit, anybody want to guess the spot this was taken from and the identity of the saddle that frames the view?

Re: Chantry Flat area, trail work, 10/15

Hey Patrick, thanks for sharing those images. Great to hear that it's not a total loss of the cabins. Glad that Sturdevant maybe pulled through. I'm curious to see if Fern Lodge made it. It seems like the canyon bottoms are usually protected to some degree by the moisture and the fire jumps across t...

Re: Guess the trail name!

Thank you for the enlightening history lesson on this trail - if the sign is still there, it must have been an officially recognized, if not maintained trail within living memory. Would you say the sign is from the 70s? Amazing to think how many trails and routes have been surrendered and left to fa...

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

Makes me curious as to when they changed the name from Rattlesnake Trail to Kenyon Devore Trail. I think it was in the late '90s after the trail's namesake had passed away? Nice profile of the gentleman for whom the trail was renamed while he was still among the living: https://www.latimes.com/arch...

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

Seems to have come up both Rush Creek and Rattlesnake Trail and is now surrounding communications facilities.

I'm starting to wonder if Camp Hi-Hill/Opid's Camp will survive this one.

There's an interesting discussion of increasing fire frequency on a state level in today's LA Times: https://www.latimes.com/projects/califo ... 0col1-main My hope is that the speed of the current Bobcat fire will result in the beneficial kind of fire that clears out a lot of vegetation but moves on...

In current images, you can see a ridge in front of the flames so it appears the heart of the atomic blast is in shortcut canyon... I think.

Looks like the fire may be making its way up Rush Creek now approaching the Observatory from the north: Bobcat910.jpg I just checked last night's footage and it looks like they set a backfire yesterday evening at the doorstep of the Observatory in the vicinity of the Rim Trail. Hopefully that will p...

Re: Bobcat Fire in West Fork

Flared up again a few hours ago on the N/NE side of Wilson and now it's making a run up towards Redbox. On the timelapse link, you can see the flareup start around 12:30 and then it promptly jumps to the north side of the canyon and begins to march east into the shortcut canyon, west fork campgroun...

Station fire: 160,000 acres
100% containment after 7+ weeks (Aug 26 to Oct 16, 2009)

Bobcat fire: 94,000 acres
15% containment after 2 weeks

My impression is that this fire has expanded much more rapidly than the Station Fire - hard to say what will come...

Awesome find. That last phrase has a nice ring to it. They should use it in a police show:
"Tell us now or we'll put you away for illegal handling of liquors at the goat farm"

If you watch the west camera time lapse from last night you can see fire trucks on the road right next to the flames to give you a sense of the scale of what they were facing:
