He'd make his case just a teenie weenie bit more credible if he would stop conflating backpack tax and backpacking tax.

Still...I'm in the "go pound sand you f'ing moron" camp.

Let me be clear: taxation is theft.

That said, whoever came up with this idea likely reviewed how the shooting, fishing, and hunting sports are (heavily) taxed to support wildlife, habitat, protection, and management. In most cases, the entire costs are paid directly from taxes on these activities and their respective equipment.

General comment, beware of so-called sin taxes, something you enjoy may be viewed as a sin or luxury by others.

$3000 for everything...on sale now. Signal virtue and save some cash at the same time..yes!
The tax is nothing..and extra $500.....you are paying $80,000 for an electric car right? Easy peasy.
