Are there GPS units that detect a heartrate monitor? What I mean is, I don't expect the GPS unit to be on my wrist measuring heartrate, but if I have a heartrate strap around my torso, the GPS unit would be recording the data. Any ideas?

I have a Garmin Forerunner 305 and it does exactly what you're after. I've had it for over a year and am not current on what's available, but I would be surprised if there aren't other choices. The Forerunner is nice, though.

awesome! only prob with this baby is no barometric altimeter...

what would be perfect is to have one device (handheld but probably not watch) that

measures GPS
has some sort of pedometer ('back up' for distance data)
barometric altimeter (first source for elevation, gps is 'back up')
heart rate monitor

The key is to have all this data synced to do all sorts of processing and performance evaluation of myself and the hike!

I tend to use the GPS watch for recording rather than navigation, so I'm pretty happy with it. But it does have its shortcomings. In addition to the ones you mention, one needs pretty good eyes to see the heart rate figures. Mine are not getting any better! Most of the rest of the display is pretty good.
