Re: "Death March" Scouting Trip - June 8
I wouldn't mind going all the way to Middle Hawkins if the day is nice. I'll be backpacking this weekend, so will check back after Monday. Middle Hawkins sounds good. I haven't tagged it in awhile. If you can go, maybe a car shuttle is in order so we can stumble down Pigeon Ridge on the return. Nev...

Re: "Death March" Scouting Trip - June 8
Interested parties are invited to join me on an exploratory scouting trip from Shoemaker Rd to Rattlesnake Peak and beyond on Saturday, June 8 at 6AM. The primary goal of this hike is to collect information for a possible future attempt at the 13-Peaks "San Gabriel Death March" challenge....

Thanks for your reply. Yes, apparently the gate is open sometimes. Here are some links - each from the same point on Maple Springs Rd. I'm trying to figure out why the mileages are so different. 10.5 miles http://nobodyhikesinla.com/2010/06/06/modjeska-peak/ 12.8 miles http://sweet-adversity.com/in...

Very nice Sean and Brad. I've done the canyon to the right of that from Ice House to the summit in winter three times and the next ridge to the west in winter once, the ridge time was dedicated to a buddy that past from cancer I left a memento up there in his honor just above where you two topped ou...

Re: Modjeska Peak questions
The route from the end of Modjeska Canyon to the summit is over 20 miles, the route up Maple Springs Road (Starting at the end of Santiago Canyon Road - there's a gate there and no car access past that point the last I heard but things do change) is 18.3 miles in the Book "Afoot and Afield in O...

Re: Pictures or posters of local mountains for sale?
Does anyone know about a place where you can get pics of various peaks or wider shots of the San Gabriel/San Bernarndino/San Jacinto Mountains? I was thinking of putting a couple of framed shots up around the walls of my office, but I can't find much out there. Thanks in advance! You can ask Calico...

Re: Santa Ana Mtns:Missing hiker found
Those two lost hikers should have to pay for their rescue since they only ended up in that situation due to their negligence. I don't agree with sticking the tax payers with the cost of this easily avoidable accident. Not that it's my opinion but if you were to relate that to other things like say ...

Obviously as noted the section from Rattlesnake to S. Re: Whitney 2013 Training Hikes
I think the most important thing is to at least spend the day prior to your hike (if attempting to dayhike) at a high altitude. You could drive up further north and climb White Mountain, or drive up to Horseshoe Meadows (at 10,000 ft and very close to Whitney Portal) and do some light hiking at hig...

There are some hikers who are just boys and spend time trying to hike simple peaks in the Southland or think that the Sierra is the definition of adventure. Then there are the men who understand adventure and head to distant locations and climb real mountains such as McKinley. This was to be a wint...

Re: Newton Drury Peak: Last of the 10K's
It's possible for a really strong hiker to do them in 24 hours. At least 3 people that I have read about have done it. They've started at midnight and done a big loop. If you mean the 17 peaks in the San Bernardino area yes it can be done, Rick Kent did it two or three years ago. San Bernardino Pea...
