Nice exposure! The crux was obvious. Glad you didn't fall. Were those deer or sheep bones?

Big air on that jump. Did you jump from the boulder or is your vertical NBA caliber?
Nice report. Smith was one of my early conquests. It seemed bigger back then. Still a fun hike with great views. Bonus for bonus peak!

Thanks for posting this. I was thinking about making a trip to Los Padres, but was worried about damage to the roads. So many trailheads require a 10+ mile dirt road drive. I'll stay in the desert until March.

Re: Mission abort at South Fork
On Friday I went up to the South Fork trailhead with the goal of doing Charlton on the last day of clear weather before the next storm came in on Saturday. I didn't know what conditions would be like, so I brought microspikes, snowshoes, and crampons. There was snow all the way down to the trailhea...

Re: Mount McKinley
Have you considered doing Condor Point from Trail Canyon? I think it's a lot of gain (~5k), but I've read a couple of trip reports on it. Last time I tried was in 2018 or 2019 and it was impassable (in my opinion) beyond the remains of Tom Lucas camp. I spent an hour making about 1/4 mile progress ...

A bear skull is rare find! Was it a baby skull by any chance? There used to be a baby carcass in there, Sean knew where it was, but I thought it was lost under downed trees.

That's a fun summit. I got into a bad batch of poodle dog on the way. It looks cold out there right now. Since Pinnacles is relatively short, some people do Mount Marie Louise on the same trip. It starts a couple of miles away on a dirt road. This is Pinnacles from Marie Louise... https://eispiraten...

I almost did your hike in reverse (excluding Strawberry). From Red Box, I went to the Strawberry-Lawlor saddle, up the west ridge to Lawlor. Then, down the east firebreak to Barley Flats high point. The firebreak to the water tower was ugly, with tall grass and dead vegetation. I didn't stay long be...

Re: 2 hikers, including former Dallas Cowboy player, killed in fall near Idyllwild
There have long been reports of flaky rock on certain routes. Someone fell and died from Vampire a few years ago.
Regardless of prep and skill, bad luck can still happen. A big flake breaks off and it's sayonara.

I'm scheduled to be in the Sierra that weekend with teke. Onion Valley. Maybe we'll see you Jeff. Are you guys doing Mt Gould? We cancelled due to weather. Wind chill will hit single digits Saturday with a dusting of snow. I do want to hike it some day. I haven't done anything out of Onion Valley.

Whoa. That looks super cool. Thanks for posting. How often does that place get visitors? What does the register say? Very popular since it's on two Sierra Club lists. 343 attempts in Peakbagger. Owens Peak
Owens Peak (8,453') has a striking profile from highway 395 in the southern Sierra. It is the highest mountain in a 17 mile radius and is featured on multiple lists: HPS #49 and SPS #239. It is a P2K and was designated an HPS Star Emblem. I left the OC at 3:20 AM for the trailhead at the end of Indi...

Beautiful photos. Sad news about the 6-year old. Your video editing skills are pretty advanced. Good job. That plain seems pretty dangerous with a high density of rattlesnakes. Dima can swap skull cleaning techniques with you. The few I've tried to clean up, I used hydrogen peroxide. I only I've sav...
