Monrovia and Rankin

This is mostly a report about the Rincon Shortcut OHV road that starts by the Rincon Fire Station.

To use this road, you need a permit from the Glendora Ranger Station (Mon-Th). Permits are good for two weeks and they change the gate lock combo every two weeks. They also give you a sticker to put on the outside of your rearview mirror to identify authorized vehicles. I got mine around 8 AM and was at the gate about 40 minutes later. The road itself is buttery smooth. The best maintained dirt road I've driven anywhere. Sedans could make it no problem.

I drove about 12 miles, about a mile from Monrovia and parked at a large turnout. The Ranger said I could not drive all the way to ACH since some trees were down, but I could have driven all the way to the Monrovia firebreak. Anyway, short, steep trip up the firebreak. Monrovia had a benchmark and register and a tattered US flag. I continued does the firebreak to Rankin, where I found a plaque for Rev. Rankin. Then reversed course. Most of the other people up here appeared to be hunting.

Thank you so much for this info. I'm helping a friend complete all the hps peaks and we were wondering about Monrovia.

This info on getting the gate key is so helpful!!

Nice trip report

Here is the official forest service web page: https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/angeles/ ... rdb5318354

I think the Glendora station is only open Mon-Th, but the web page says Mon-Fri.

My trip was 4.6 miles, 1550' gain. You can drive all the way to the Monrovia firebreak, so cut off 2 miles from that.

This links to a page where you can download a track that includes Clamshell: https://peakbagger.com/climber/ascent.aspx?aid=511001

Thank you! I got my permit but forgot to ask about clamshell Anyways, they were so nice. My permit is good for 6 weeks. I got 3 combos for the gate for every two weeks they change it. I can go more than once if I wanted to maybe some peeps from the group will want to go with me.

Thanks again!

I'm excited.
