Double feature: tahquitz and cornell peak

What a weekend: took Dima out to Idyllwild for his first trad or multipitch climb and he absolutely crushed it; made short work of white maiden's (5.8 var, 800'), then since we finished relatively early, went for extra credit up El camino real (10-, 500'). We couldn't resist doing the classic layback third pitch despite the sun setting, but it sure made for some great views. If Dima was scared shitless, he sure didn't seem that way!

Then we primitive camped off of s ridge road just outside of town, where I was officially indoctrinated into the cult after applying an eispiraten sticker to my helmet.

The next day we hiked Cornell peak from humber park (15mi, 5000') for some fun 4th class and views. The 4th class involved maybe 15 feet at the very top, but I very much enjoyed the rock scrambling on the last couple hundred feet of vertical gain. Great views of all kinds of mountains, farms, salty seas. And we kept an admirable enough pace, despite starting close to 11am, to make it to the lumber mill for some local eats.

I mostly have the same photos. They live here (climbing) and here (hiking).

This was excellent! I have to say, though, that I was promised a 5.4. We lost the easy line immediately, but it was manageable: Wes could lead this in his sleep, and I was strong-enough to follow. The 5.10 extra credit was cool. It was a race against the setting sun, which we lost. Which meant two long rappells in the dark:

The video wesweswes posted above is also excellent. What an intro to this activity :)

I've been eyeing Cornell every time I'd walk by on the way to San Jacinto in years past, and this was a perfect day to summit it. It was much more chill than the day before. We spent almost the entire day on maintained trails. The peak is just above the Round Valley campground. Which is large, very nice and well-developed and also completely deserted. The scramble to the peak was easy, with just the tippy-top requiring any skill. The register says we were the first ones there in 9 months. We were making good time on the way back, and raced against a completely-arbitrary self-imposed deadline; a race that we won!

Impressive climbing!

Expecting a 5.4 then climbing a 5.10? Bold move and great job both of you.
