COQUINA MINE

A couple of weeks ago I led my Wednesday group on a hike to Coquina Mine.

The trail starts at Las Llajas trailhead at the Marr Ranch open space in Simi Valley

The mine was a limestone quarry that was abandoned in the 1930's. Along the route abandoned mining equipment can be found.

We explored a few other trails that were not part of my original plan. The trail was mostly exposed but I chose the perfect day to do this. It was overcast and very cool.

Along the route some really cool fossils can be found. I won't disclose their exact location. If you want more info I can send you my GPS track.

Anyways, after exploring the mine and hiking on one of the unplanned routes, we found a gold mine of yellow and white Mariposa Lilly's.

We also found many other wildflowers but the Mariposa Lilly's ruled!

Stats: 7 miles, 1400 ft gain

There's lots of marine fossils like that all over those hills.

Love that place. The last time I went there bees had built a hive inside the gas tank. There used to be cults living in the canyon below.

Wow alot has changed.
Thanks for the pics
Didn't see the rock wall or the fence. Nice pic of the patent dates. Guess I missed that.
It's scary to think a cult was once there.

The rock wall and fence are along the way as you walk up the canyon, on the left side. It used to be a bee farm. There's also an old tipped over utility truck on the right side. The patent date was from some old machinery on the side of the hill below the steam shovel. That stuff is all still up there.
