Lost in hills man is near death

"Half starved and fainting with exhaustion from having wandered in the mountains near Mt. Wilson since Tuesday, Clyde Bunker, a laborer, who has been working on the flood control check dam in a canyon, was found by employes of the Allen ranch in Eaton canyon this morning and rushed to the Pasadena emergency hospital, where a hard fight is now being made for his life.

His body covered with severe bruises and his face and hands scratched and lacerated, he at last succeeded in making his way into the Eaton canyon after having lived on herbs and roots for the past three days.

He became lost in the mountains when he wandered off from his companions engaged in the county flood control check dam in a canyon near Mt. Wilson. Weak from exhaustion and starvation, he was soon unable to go more than a short distance without falling upon the sharp rocks and underbrush of the mountain side.

His mother, Mrs. Rose Witzel of 3015 Fifth street San Diego, has been notified of his condition.

Bunker, who is 35 years of age, will be taken to the Pasadena hospital."

Wow, I hope he recovers.

As is so often said here, there has to be more to this story. With the canyon geography of the San Gabriels, there are not too many places it is difficult to find your way. Thanks for sharing the story.

It's a mystery. I couldn't find another article about him, so I assume he recovered.

Starvation after three days? What roots would he have eaten (while in Eaton)?

Don't know, but the mustard is pretty tasty in Eaton Canyon.
