We just hung out with a rattlesnake today on Mt. Lowe. It didn't mind us eating lunch under the same tree.

That's a nice one. It seems like the older they get the darker the shade. Some people call them Black Diamond Rattlers

It was definitely an older snake. Long, thick, and super chill. The darkest one I've ever seen was in Coldwater Canyon east of Baldy Notch. It was huge, tucked inside a rock crevice, and nearly black.

Was this on the trail or a bit off trail?

It was on the summit, a little off the trail.

Cool rattler! The black coloring seems weird, but it must match where he hangs out. The color adaptability is amazing.
