I'm gonna post articles published in January that relate to our local mountain history. This one is from the January 1, 1875 edition of the Los Angeles Herald. It describes the effort to locate and refine oil in the mountains near San Fernando.

At the ten gallons per day mentioned in the story it seems that grape brandy was more valuable in and near Los Angeles.

Ten gallons per spring per day. One hundred springs x 10 = 1000 gallons per day. 1000 x 365 = 365,000 gallons per year.

The first true commercial oil well is in Pico Canyon in Santa Clarita that began in 1876 and you can still see the spot today.
