Legless Trail Companion

Came across this guy on the Gabrieleno Trail last Sunday between Sturtevant and Newcomb Pass. He was totally chill as I checked him out and snapped a few shots. Didn't even flinch when I stepped right over the top of him to continue on my way up the trail. I'm thinking he might be a San Diego Gopher Snake but no expert am I. What say the herpetologists out there?

That is one cool reptile. He looks to be about 6' in the picture. Is that about right?

I'd estimate he was probably closer to 4'
