Saw this guy on east Santa Cruz Island yesterday. No fear.

Neat. It's hard to tell from the pic but was it noticeably smaller than its mainland cousins?

I don't really know tracker since I never see its mainland cousins. But this guy was approximately the size of a large house cat, perhaps a hair bigger.

Cool fox! I have yet to see a fox of any kind anywhere.

Do you need any special permits to hike Santa Cruz (or Catalina)?

No permits to hike Santa Cruz teke, but there may be different requirements if you plan to stay the night. The eastern quarter of the island is owned by the NPS; the western 3/4 of the island is owned by the Nature Conservancy so you need permission to hike on that side of the island (and probably a chaperone).
