I've seen them used on Survivorman. Compressing a gas QUICKLY creates heat. He was able to make an ember on the first try....and create fire with the ember. Sure it works.

Thx mtn, I saw it in a website related to boy scouting....theory looked kool. Originated in Borneo......from what I read.

If I get one made soon, I'll give a heads up on it..
