Our small LA troupe of friends that enjoy the outdoors made plans for our first high Sierra backpacking trip. After some research we opted for less traveled area to seek some solitude.

Many more photos, a video & the story behind our trip here:

We hiked in after a night's stay in Bishop. Taking the Tamarack Lakes Trail out of Rock Creek Lake. By late afternoon we reached Dorothy Lake, our basecamp.

The next day we did a day hike up to Tamarack Lakes, which was the true alpine experience we were looking for. Dark clouds threatened & we made it back to camp a bit before the thunder, lighting & rain covered the valley. Off & on that eve & night we would be treated to earth shaking thunder w/ more lighting flashes than I had experience in my life.

Terrific trail report and photos, Jeremy. What a great initiation into Sierra backpacking.

Excellent timing and luck with the rain being courteous enough to hold off til you had shelter set up.

Schat's, yummmm. ( I have my favorites from there--don't we all?!)

If you are into fly fishing at all, Tamarack has a good population of Goldens, plus some brookies. Your side hike to Francis Lake takes you to the only lake in that area with cutthroat. Add in a Brown or two (found along that area) and you could easily C & R a Sierra Grand Slam with your itinerary.

Thanks again for the post and pics,
kind regards,
