How do you like those lightweight Petzl belay gloves? I was thinking about getting those exact ones a few weeks ago at REI.

Both, actually. Hiking, then climbing.

Tim, so far I like them. I've not really tested them. Flogged my shitty car on GMR with them, so they grip well. They seem good. A bit warm, methinks. Seems if the don't immediately suck, they're good.

Hiking route should be available, which is what I would be game for. Basically, hike to the base of the last rappel, check it out, then attempt to summit Smith from the ridge one to the north...if successful, return from Smith via the southern firebreak. Should be able to get to at least 4300ft or about 1200 elevation gain.I think Taco is looking for the challenge of the ridge one south(most left ridge in my pic) or as called the SE ridge http://www.snwburd.com/bob/trip_photos/ ... Yup..recreational spot. Grab a bite to eat, etc...but no ropes or ropes backup plan for me right now....kind of only into trade routes...hehehe Hikeup style

I could go Sunday.....theres a news report of the first operation of the season resulting in the fleeing of 2 men guarding some plants($6.2 mil worth) in Placerita canyon area.
