Don't Be Stupid!

Considering the weather forecast, this is NOT a good week to go hiking. Our watercourses can go from a trickle to a raging torrent full of tumbling boulders and logs in just minutes. I have been trapped in Big Santa Anita Canyon on two occasions, but I was lucky enough to have cabins to stay in until the creeks subsided. When you factor in all that ash and exposed dirt waiting to come down in some areas you could be dead in an instant.

I am probably preaching to the choir in this forum, but you wouldn't believe how many ignorant and/or foolish hikers I have run into in my six years at the pack station. They don't truly respect Mother Nature.

And don't forget "Opid's Camp" - actually still called that in weather circles, even though it has been named Camp Hi-Hill since the Long Beach School District bought it in the 1930's. It is an anomalous spot that gets tons of rain, especially in a Pineapple Express situation. The camp is near Red Box Saddle, which means that we could see heavy fire debris flow down the West Fork and the Arroyo Seco. That's why they're closing the highway.
