The amazing thing about Hal Summers isn't that he made a resolution to hike every day in 2009.
The amazing thing is that the he actually did it.
The La Quinta man came up with the idea in late 2008, as he thought about the resolutions people traditionally make.
Now Summers has explored previously unknown terrain. Some of the hikes were well-known and well-marked. Others were paths he discovered along the way.
“I thought I knew every hike that was out there,” he says. “But it turns out that every time I'd go out, I'd discover three other trails I'd never seen before.
“That to me is the amazing thing — not everything on my to-do list has been checked off. In fact, my list has almost gotten longer.”
Along this journey, he has seen bighorn sheep, dozens of coyotes, small animals and just one rattlesnake.
