Preliminary reports said the man was 21 years old and was hiking with a 17-year-old friend.

The two were hiking near the popular waterfall at the nature center, Pasadena Fire Department spokeswoman Lisa Derderian said.

The hiker fell about 200 feet to his death shortly after 10 a.m.

She said the initial 9-1-1 call was made from a cell phone.

Officials say the body will be brought down by stretcher, then taken out of the canyon by helicopter.
