Just wondering if anyone knows exactly how many peaks there are in the SG's?

Love the new picture by the way. The essence of what's good.

I actually have no idea. There are tons of minor peaks all over the place that people have probably never climbed/hiked, especially in the San Gabriel Wilderness. Think of all those peaks guarded by TOOOOONS of brush and thick Scrub Oak. Twin Peaks is made up of who knows how many peaks... Ontario Peak has some 13 summits. Some people don't consider Harwood a mountain, until they climb it from Stockton Flat or a similar mountaineering route.

Telegraph has two summits, the south one has better views IMHO. Then you've got all those little peaks in the San Dimas Experimental Forest, the place you can't go. Lotsa minor peaks on the ridge west of Hawkins.

Lots.

I betcha there isn't a single square meter of the San Gabriel Mountains that hasn't been climbed, hiked, crawled over, mined or slept on by human beings. Remember there were more people up there on a typical weekend 100 years ago than there are now.

Back in the day it was about the more popular peaks just as much as now. The San Gabriel wilderness wasn't singled out until the 1960s. With firefighters being dropped off in remote locations, its tough to say an area is unknown...even Mermaid pk 2949 could have seen human footprints. But they havent been dropped off at every single minor peak.

I think the lack of belief is because everything can be done today with all the stuff and skills that are out there...but until someone steps foot on a pk like 5014 West Ridge Twin, it'll be on the naysayers to prove it has been done...there are still a few left that are the kind of peaks that people could say 'oh yeah, easy once I get around to it' but then when it gets serious they back out fast.
