Body found in forest identified
Staff Reports
Posted: 01/12/2009 12:59:50 PM PST
ANGELES NATIONAL FOREST - The body of a man found in the forest north of La Crescenta has been identified, coroners said.
Martin Wehmann, 40, of Los Angeles, was found Sunday more than 120 feet below a bridge near Big Tujunga Canyon Road, about 10 miles north of the road's origin in Sunland, Los Angeles County sheriff's Lt. Angela Shepherd said.
The cause of death wasn't yet released or determined as the report was not finished, coroner's officials said.
Officials from the United States Forestry Department discovered the body about 3:30 p.m. and contacted sheriff's officials, Shepherd said.
The body initially appeared to be that of someone who jumped off the bridge, Shepherd said, however coroner's officials and detectives from the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau were summoned to investigate.
Members of the Montrose Search and Rescue Team worked Sunday afternoon to remove the body from the forest.

I was taking a client from Dallas on a short tour of the San Gabriels and drove by the dam about 1:00ish. Neither of us noticed anything out of the ordinary. There was a couple washing/waxing their car at the overlook, and perhaps a vehicle parked on the upstream side of the bridge below the dam.
No one was walking near the bridge when we passed it.
I had just commented though, that this canyon was infamous for dumped bodies....

Ban bridges.
Ok. Seriously. Interesting story if you believe some of the comments to the linked story.

I just spoke to my client again about his recollections of our drive-by. We did notice a recent (not new) whitish looking crossover vehicle backed into a rugged pullout a hundred yards or so below the "official" overlook -- with its rear hatch open.
He also recollects overhearing someone talking into a cellphone saying something like "he had the Polaroids". Now maybe this is just the fertile imagination of someone who read a murder mystery recently, but maybe not.....
We also passed an ascending solo cyclist between the pullout and the dam.
Maybe he noticed something.

Actually, my client called the cops today when he found out about the fatality and subsequent posts.
I just spoke to them too. They are referring our info to homicide, fwiw.

Never heard from the detectives. Maybe they found evidence to corroborate suicide.
