Two lost and injured hikers were rescued by three other hikers on Skyline at 7500 feet before search and rescue got there.

Thanks, Cy.

Interesting that experienced mountaineers would call SAR. I guess they must have been getting hypothermic?

I think that experienced mountaineers call SAR when necessary and inexperienced call SAR when inconvenienced or when it's too late - but not when they should.

As a SAR person I would say that inexperienced people may need to call for help in a situation that someone with more experience could deal with. However, they still genuinely need help and it is better for them to call than try to figure something out and get in more trouble or get dead.

Rescue is free for a reason. We'd rather roll out to an easy call, maybe even get turned around 5 minutes later when they have walked out, than to go on a body recovery.
